Frequently Asked Questions

  • It depends. (Everyone’s favorite answer, I know!) And, truly, it does depend on what you want to change, how ready your nervous system is for change, what resources you have to help you change. And, therapy is 100% voluntary. You are welcome to take a break whenever you want and come back when you are ready and I will be happy to welcome you back, hear about what has changed, and help you move forward from where you are now. Some clients are in therapy for a long time and some come for a few months. We will have conversations throughout our therapeutic relationship about your goals, how you are meeting your goals, and if you are ready to end, pause, or change your appointment frequency.

  • I see clients on Monday & Wednesday from 1p-5p and Tuesday & Thursday from 10a-2p. This blocking allows her time to work with her brain to engage in trainings, networking, writing, and consultation to stay as up to date as possible with new and emerging practices in the counseling profession.

  • Through my training, I have come to understand trauma as anything that has been too much for your nervous system to manage and makes your window of tolerance for daily stressors smaller. Which means that trauma could be a wide range of events and are different for everyone. There are “big T” traumas that people think of - car accident, assault, military experience and “small t” traumas that many people experience - bullying, being neurodivergent in a world that isn’t built for your needs, childhood emotional neglect.

I work primarily with the “small t” traumas that people often are told to get over or have been told and repeated “sticks and stones can break my bones, but words will never hurt me” when really, the words directed at them have been devastating and impacted their nervous systems in ways difficult to explain. We can work together to increase your window of tolerance, decrease shame, and help you live the life you want to.

  • I trust you and your lived experience. And, we’ll have a conversation about how you came to this identity. I am not interested in gatekeeping an identity (or diagnosis) and I love it when clients have a sense of “oh, I make sense” after a lifetime of feeling like that might not fit.

  • Short answer: no.

Longer answer: At A Lot Like Living we see you as an individual, completely unique from any other person on the planet. As such, we do not accept insurance plans. Insurance really likes boxes and check marks and sameness. We believe in science and evidenced based practices, AND we believe that sometimes you might need something different. Insurance companies require a diagnosis for our work together. We believe that you should be able to access quality therapy whether or not your life experience and symptoms qualify for a mental health diagnosis.

We can provide monthly superbills (receipts) for your insurance company to reimburse you for your sessions. If you are interested in this option, please contact your insurance company before we begin to make sure they will reimburse services for out of network providers.

A Lot Like Living accepts HSA/FSA, credit card, and cash payments.

  • I offer telehealth for clients in the states of Ohio and Minnesota. You are welcome to engage in virtual sessions if you are more comfortable with that mode of therapy. We can get some great work done virtually!

You are also more than welcome to come to the office in Cincinnati, OH if you’d like. I share space with other therapists and we are intentional about only using lamps (no big lights in common spaces or my office), as much natural lighting as possible, having fidgets available in the lobby, and low/no scented products. You are welcome to bring comfort items, blankets, food, water, etc. that might be helpful for you in session.

  • I am a cis white woman in a straight presenting relationship. I have lived experience being multiply neurodivergent.

  • Therapy with A Lot Like Living costs $170 per 50-minute session. You can pay with cash, credit card, Flex Spending Accounts (FSA), Health Savings Accounts (HSA). I can provide you with a Superbill (receipt) for you to submit to your insurance provider if they offer out of network reimbursement. You would need to check with your insurance company prior to beginning therapy if you would like that option. If you do request a superbill, I would have to provide a diagnosis for you to share with your insurance company. We can talk about the risks and benefits of sharing a mental health diagnosis with your insurance company in session or the consultation.

  • You are more than welcome to reschedule/cancel your session with more than 24 hours notice. If you cancel with less than 24 hours notice, or no show, the card on file will be charged the full session fee. If you need to cancel your session with less than 24 hours notice, please contact Meghan and if the appointment can be rescheduled within the same calendar week you will not be charged the missed session fee.

  • I strongly believe that therapy is a collaborative relationship between the therapist and client. I also understand that there is an inherent power dynamic due to that relationship. I am aware of the importance of clients dictating the terms of their treatment, especially if they are part of the ND community and have had to mask to get through their lives. If you do not want to do something in session (even if I think it is a great idea) you are more than welcome to say, “no” and if you do say “yes” immediately, I work hard to remember to check in to make sure your “yes” is for you and not an attempt to make me happy or to “do the right thing”. My goal is to help you to uncover the voice and choice you might have had to bury to stay safe and to encourage you to begin to feel safe enough to utilize those.
